Rates for Revision, Review, Post-Editing & Proofreading
I work with texts originally written in English as well as texts translated from Dutch into English. This includes post-editing machine translations and 'polishing' texts written or translated by non-native speakers. I can also help those writers who just feel that their English text could do with a little work to make it publishable.
To find out about the differences between revision, review, proofreading, and post-editing see the revision & proofreading page. Or get in touch with me by sending me a quick email or using the contact form on this site.
Because the quality of writing or translation in texts can vary significantly, I charge an hourly rate of €29 for revision, review, post-editing and proofreading.
Do you offer per-word rates for machine translation post-editing?
In most cases, I prefer to charge by the hour. However, if the text has been by a good NMT, it may be possible to pay by the word. (Please be are that these rates are for post-editing only. This is because it is advisable to have an additional full proofread done by another linguist.) To find out about the differences between light, standard and full post-editing, see the MTPE page.
As a general guide, my standard per-word rates for post-editing are approximately:
Light monolingual editing: €0.01 per word
Standard monolingual editing: €0.02 per word
Full monolingual editing: €0.03 per word
Light bilingual editing: €0.02 per word
Standard bilingual editing: €0.04 per word
Full bilingual editing: €0.06 per word
Additional charges
I try to be clear and upfront about what a task will cost. However, in practice, actual rates will depend on the quality of the translation. Where a translation is of a very low standard, it may need to be fully retranslated. I will always agree this with you first. Retranslation is charged at my standard translation rates. When dealing with features of the text that increase the time needed to produce a high-quality text, additional charges may be applied. These will always be agreed in advance with you before work on your translation begins or as soon as possible thereafter if the issue isn't immediately apparent. This might include, but is not limited to:
Source text delivered as scanned image or pdf, especially if this is poor quality
Non-native or poorly written Dutch source text
Subjects that require a significant amount of research
Texts that contain a lot of jargon
What else do you need to know?
These prices are meant as a guide only. Please keep in mind that every text is unique, so I may not be able to tell you with exact precision what it will cost and how long it will take to review your text until I have seen it.
I'll do my best to accommodate your individual requirements.
Standard rates assume that a text is reasonably well-translated, simple, jargon-free, and does not require extensive research.
I do not apply VAT charges.
My minimum charge for editing is €20.00.
My turnaround times don't include weekends or public holidays.
If typing or other errors are made by me, they will be corrected free of charge if the work is resubmitted within 48 hours. Correction of errors reported after 48 hours and any other corrections, changes or additions requested by you can be made at a rate of €29 per hour.
Payment
Invoices will usually be sent after all your files have been edited, and you've approved them. However, if your project is large, I may invoice in batches as work is completed rather than at the end. My usual payment term is 30 days. My preferred payment method is by bank transfer to an account in the Netherlands or the UK. Payments can also be made through PayPal, Wise, and Payoneer.
