Revision, Review & Proofreading

Why is editing important?

The most well-translated text can still be undermined by issues such as spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, formatting inconsistencies or mistranslations. And even if a text was originally written in English by a careful native speaker, mistakes could still have crept in.

Professional editing ensures your text is accurate, idiomatic and ready for its intended use or publication.

What services do I offer?

Bilingual review

A bilingual review compares the English text with the Dutch source to assess accuracy, meaning and tone. I identify mistranslations, terminology issues and awkward phrasing to ensure the English reads naturally.

I also check spelling, grammar, punctuation and basic formatting (such as headings and lists). Rather than making direct changes, I provide a written report or add comments highlighting any issues found.

Monolingual review

A monolingual review assesses how well a text stands on its own, whether it is a translation or was originally written in English. If the text is a translation, I generally do not refer to the source unless necessary.

I review clarity, readability and flow, flagging any issues, and check spelling, grammar, punctuation and formatting, including the correct use of headings and lists. Feedback is provided via comments or a report rather than direct edits.

Revision

Revision involves making direct edits to refine English texts and Dutch-to-English translations, improving fluency, clarity and accuracy. This may include changes to wording, sentence structure and grammar.

Where possible, I compare translations with the Dutch source to ensure accuracy, but I can also work without it if required. All changes are tracked, allowing you to review and approve them easily.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final stage before publication. It focuses on catching any remaining typos, punctuation inconsistencies or formatting issues. A proofread is usually carried out without reference to the source text.

Post-editing of AI and machine translation

Post-editing differs slightly from the services above, as the goal is not always to perfect a text but to make it fit for purpose. You can find a detailed explanation of how I post-edit texts produced by tools such as ChatGPT, DeepL and Google Translate on the MTPE page.
