Not every text needs translating. Sometimes it’s already written – it just needs a careful pair of eyes to make it read as it should.

That’s what revision and proofreading are for. Whether you’ve got an English text that’s almost ready, a translation that needs checking, or writing by a non-native speaker that doesn’t quite flow, I can get it ready to publish.

What’s the difference between revision and proofreading?

People use these words loosely, so it helps to be clear about what each one involves and to know what your text needs.

Proofreading is the final check. Your text is already in good shape, and you want a last read-through to catch anything that slipped past – spelling, grammar, punctuation, typos and small inconsistencies. Nothing is rewritten; the text is simply made clean and correct before it goes out.

Revision goes deeper. As well as correcting mistakes, I look at how the text reads – clarity, flow, tone and word choice – and reshape anything clumsy, confusing or that doesn’t sound natural in English. If your text is a Dutch-to-English translation, I can also check it against the original, so nothing has been lost or changed along the way.

Not sure which one you need? Send me the text, and I’ll tell you honestly. Often a quick look is all it takes.

Editing AI & machine translations

If you’re trying to keep costs down and would like to use ChatGPT or Google Translate to do the initial translation of a text, I can check it for you to make sure it’s ready to publish. While similar to revision, post-editing AI or machine translation is a different job with different requirements. Find out more on the MTPE page.
