English & Dutch-to-English Transcription

Transcription Styles

I offer smart verbatim and full verbatim transcriptions of audio and video files working from English into English or Dutch into English. I can adapt either style to suit your needs. For example, a transcription of a focus group session might use full verbatim for the participants but smart verbatim for the moderator. Or you might want to reflect how someone talks by leaving in slang and filler words but omitting the false starts and repetitions.

I have a default house style but will work with your preferences regarding format, tagging, et cetera, wherever possible to produce a transcription that works best for you.

Smart verbatim

A smart verbatim transcription contains all the relevant information heard in an audio or video, but some changes will be made to the text so that it reads clearly and easily. False starts, repetitions, and filler words are omitted. Slang and contractions like 'gonna' are replaced. Small grammatical errors can be corrected.

Full verbatim

A full verbatim transcription reproduces the original audio as accurately as possible. Usually, it's a transcription of everything that is uttered. This includes false starts, repetition, filler words and phrases like 'you know', pauses, ums, slang, grammatical errors, and contractions like 'gonna'.

Tagging, timestamps & diarisation

I can add time stamps to your transcript at any interval you like. (To find out about pricing for timestamps, see the Transcription Rates page.) I can also use tagging to denote things like laughter, applause or pauses.

Usually, speakers are identified by number, but if your audio file is clear enough, I can add diarisation to your transcript, which identifies speakers by name (where possible). This can often be added to your transcript for free. However, it may sometimes incur a small extra charge depending on the quality of the recording, the number of speakers and other features that affect the extra time involved.

Turnaround times

My standard minimum turnaround time per hour of clear audio is 48 hours, Monday to Friday. This is for smart or full verbatim. Poor audio quality and extra options such as multiple speakers and time stamping may increase this turnaround time. All turnaround times are subject to availability. It may be possible to expedite delivery. This service has a surcharge of between 25% and 100%.
